( French, 1656 - 1746 )
Portrait of nobleman with a powered wig
Materials:
oil on canvas
Measurements:
35.24 in. (89.50 cm.) (height) by 28.27 in. (71.80 cm.) (width)
Condition:
The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. A portrait image reads well beneath a clear varnish with details in the costume preserved. There is a very small loss to the paint layer at the extreme upper left edge and an old small repaired loss in the upper right sky. Under UV inspection, the varnish appears slightly milky and retouching to address the aforementioned losses as well as frame abrasion on all 4 edges is visible. Old repairs visible under UV include 2 in the lower right quadrant on the man’s sleeve, one on his center right chest, and one at the left of the upper edge. Scattered fine retouching is visible throughout, mostly in the background, for example to the left of the sitter’s head, and in the sky at upper right, as well as spots in the lower section of his costume around his gloved hand and a small spot on his cheek. The painting can certainly hang in its current state. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame
